Demand remains healthy for housing on St. Kitts and Nevis. This ranges from rental villas to apartments to new homes. While some in the banking industry have acknowledged that loans are not as easy to get as they were even one year ago, interest in home ownership is strong and lending institutions remain committed to financing in the housing industry.
In his New Year?s message, Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas described how the Federation was faring in the financial crisis, and touched on steps that need to be taken to keep the economy healthy. ?We have to be ever conscious that although our country has not felt the brunt of the global crisis, our economy is small, open and well integrated into the global economy - so that economic activity in our Federation is bound to be significantly affected by any protraction or deepening of the global crisis,? Dr. Denzil Douglas said.
As of September 01, 2008, the Nevis Housing and Land Development Corporation had constructed or given approval for the construction of about 127 homes throughout the island under the housing programme. According to statistics
from the NHLDC,16 homes have been constructed at the Golden Grove Development Project at Brown Hill; 06
at the Grace Development Project in Church Ground; 04 at Stoney Grove; 06 at Maddens, 20 at Shaws Road in
New castle, 16 at Ramsbury, 28 approved at Cherry Gardens in Low Ground. In addition there were 33 private
homes constructed island wide.
